Recovery Effort Going Well in Mackay

20 October 2008

The Insurance Council of Australia today announced that over 73% of the 4,910 insured properties damaged by the 14 February 2008 flooding in Mackay have now been repaired.

"Our members are reporting good progess as a result of properties drying out, an important step before any significant repairs can be completed," said Kerrie Kelly, CEO of the Insurance Council of Australia. "It is a time consuming but essential task that requires the patience of all involved."

Despite delays caused by excessive humidity (Government regulations stipulate humidity levels must be lower than 16%), repairs are being completed at a good rate with insurers relying on well qualified and competent builders and trades from throughout Queensland.

Of the fully insured properties that were left completely uninhabitable, over 87% have been repaired allowing residents to return home.

Priority is still being given to those properties with the most serious damage, with a view to getting insured families living conditions back to normal as quickly and as fast as possible.

If member of the community have questions about the progress of repairs to their insured property they should in the first instance make contact with their insurance company.
